Next I cut out the back of the denim and also the lining fabric. See, a blank canvas is just waiting to be adorned. Then you will be matching the fabrics right sides together. I am following you but I put you on my favorites to so I can remember to come by! Sew neck and shoulder seams at the front.
And I did adorn it. The eye of the bird is one of those dots. Once I had the design set onto my fabric then I stitched it down see finished dress below. Next I cut out the back of the denim and also the lining fabric. The way you sew the pieces together is what makes this a-line dress reversible.
It is also designed so you can put appliqué that will wrap around to the back of the dress. Do you get it, now! Now for the tricky part. Once the above seams are sewn and pressed open, lay open the two pieces and pin them right sides together.
That is where the trick to this whole method works. See how the armholes, shoulders, neckline and hem are all sewn, but the side seams are left open. Then you will be matching the fabrics right sides together. Once it is sewn, turn the dress right side out and press all of the seams. See, no raw edges, no exposed seams. All clean and pretty. As long as the child is supervised while wearing the dress, then a large button would work. This style of dress is simple to make and can be whipped up in no time.
Once I know how this size fits, I have a couple of fun fabrics I want to make this in. Keep in mind I am making a dress that can be worn in Newfoundland so it needs to be warm enough for their changing weather. However, in a warmer climate, lightweight cottons would work beautifully, too.
That is SO adorable and SO cleverly constructed! I love this dress! The birdhouse and bird appliques are so cute! I also love the black and white fabric! I am in DFW. I love what little I saw on your sidebar. I am following you but I put you on my favorites to so I can remember to come by! Have a wonderful Saturday. It was very nice meeting you! Thanks for the tip! Love the fabric you used to line the dress too! I have a little niece that I get to sew for and I love it!
Stopping by from Sew Darn Crafty link party. Glad I came across your blog. I have a similar pattern, but I love that this one is reversible. My daughter is a tall almost 4 year old, so this style would be very age-appropriate, but she is close to a size 5 because of her height.
I love the fact that this dress is reversible. And the bird applique is just too cute!!! What a pretty dress. Is there any way I can get the pattern? I live in the UK and have tried everywhere to purchase the book.
Thanks so much for linking this up to the Friday Frenzy! You are soooo talented! I use different weight fabrics and team it with tops underneath, and warm tights. I love the way you make your instructions so clear and how the different sizes can be printed right out. You have helped me to make my dream come true by sewing all my daughter's dresses. Hi, thank you so much for sharing! After step 9, the elastic straps are actually visible from the outside of the finished product?
I just made one of these dresses, and it's perfect! Thank you so much for your tutorials and patterns, they're so easy to follow and the result is great! I also love the fabrics and would buy some in a heartbeat, but unfortunately I can't access the shop.. I live in Australia, maybe that's why?
I live in NZ and this is a good pattern I think to use calico and paint a picture on the fabric, with fabric paint. Will try and hope for success! I love this dress. I also really liked the one that was in two pieces, with a separate bodice.
This was on your site until this year I think, and I used it to make all my daughter's dresses. Would you be able to put this back on your site please? If you still have them and could upload them it would be far easier for me than trying to work out where to cut the bodice and skirt pattern and adding extra lengths for seams at the join.
I would be very happy to buy the printable patterns for the dress of course Free sewing tutorial and pattern A-line dress. The pattern is without seam allowance.
