I will first admit that I will wear a sweatshirt with shorts on a slightly chilly evening in the summer, but a sport coat is more about form than function and the form seems odd when you are mixing shorts generally viewed as more casual and a jacket generally viewed as a little more formal. If you can find a counterexample where it works, though, please show me! Let me attempt to channel the green one: If by lawn treatment you mean really wet spring and hardly any mowing?
That said, you may wonder where do I stand on this debate? But more importantly, where should most men stand. In short, I think it is okay to pair a blazer with shorts. But there is a time and a place. The look is most at home at a summer soiree or other warm weathered fete. But it can get by at any casual social event; whether in the city, suburb or country. The look dressed down even further with a polo shirt instead of a dress shirt. You may ask, what makes this look okay?
I suppose the largest reasoning is righteousness by omission. Secondly, there is something so wrong about the look that it compels me to judge it as right. Somewhat like my love of gingham shirts with French collar and cuffs. The contradiction of the formalities provides some added visual interest.
From a practical standpoint shorts are far cooler wearing than pants so in the warmest of weather the comfort provided can be paramount. But look great with a blazer, a kilt will. If with a blazer a kilt looks better?
Tell you something about shorts, that should. Extremely rare times there are… when work, shorts and a blazer can. Already be wearing shorts, you must. Outdoors must you be. Go down, the sun must. Cold very quickly it gets? And nearby, your completely unstructured cotton sportcoat is…. To hell with it then. Cross this stylistic Bering Strait you should, open another beer you shall… And with confidence wear. I am sure it can be done, like Joe said completely unstructured piece, ie, the INC micro check, since its casual…and the sportscoat needs to be a little shorter IMO, thinking a Thom Brown. Iwould wear a polo and all white tennis shoes…boom done…and your signature piece…mine is a driving cap….
The fellow who points out Bermuda is entirely correct: And it has to be really tropical: The only thing wearing shorts with a blazer does successfully is make it look like you forgot pants and are just wearing boxers. Just as there is a time and a place, there is a right way and a wrong way to wear a blazer with shorts. Obviously, the worst way to do it is with ill fitting clothes. But following that, the more I think on it, the more I am of the opinion that the look works better with a slightly shorter jacket.
